Westport

Photo Description

In 1831, the City of Westport thrived almost 20 years before Kansas City was founded. Westport was incorporated into Kansas City in 1857. John McCoy opened a trading post at Westport Road and Pennsylvania Avenue. Over the years it grew as fur trappers and farmers traded goods as wagon trains of pioneers passed through to stock up for the long journey on the Santa Fe, Oregon and California trails. Daniel Boone’s grandson, Albert built his own grocery store right across from McCoy’s. That building still exists and currently is the location for Kelly’s Westport Inn. In 1864, The Battle of Westport took place along 25 miles in 3 days. The war damaged trade and growth for the area. It was the largest battle of the Civil War west of the Mississippi. The visitor center and museum are located at 4000 Baltimore. Make sure to stop by if you are in the area. The Westport area continues to thrive today with annual art festivals and St. Patrick’s Day parades, Santa Dash, street cafes, unique places to eat, drink, shop, stay, as well as lots of options for entertainment too. This area is located about 10 minutes southwest of downtown Kansas City. Check out Westport today!
