In 1841, Dr. David Waldo purchased a 1000-acre tract of land in Jackson County that grew to 2,400 acres over time. Eventually that land became a hub for much activity including a grocery store, blacksmith, livery stable and a rail station. As progress and time moved forward, so did the Waldo area. The streetcar came, as did the dance halls, bars and honky-tonks. The streetcar ceased service in 1957, but a restored streetcar station remains today in the Harry Wiggins Trolley Track Trail. The trail is named after Mr. Wiggins. He was a former senator that persistently sponsored tax legislation for the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority. It’s one of the most popular trails in Kansas City. Today you will find a wide variety of shops, eateries, boutiques and much more still thriving in the Waldo area. It’s also the home of a well-known Kansas City bakery that has been making delicious treats for over 70 years. This area of Kansas City is located 20 minutes south of downtown Kansas City.
