Riverside
Photo Description
The story of Riverside is as deep and long as the nearby Missouri River. Native Americans were its earliest residents. They left behind many artifacts in and around the riverbanks with direct connections to a civilization that dates back nearly 6,000 years old. The earliest visitors to the area include several immigrant families from Germany, the Lewis and Clark Expedition and families from Belgium. Riverside was a main stop along the nation’s longest electric train route, the Interurban Railway, spanning 79 miles between North Kansas City and St. Joseph. Riverside gets its name from the many “river-side” businesses including a horse racing venue that was built and operated by Tom Pendergast, Kansas City’s infamous political boss. Ironically, betting and tax problems contributed to the end of his career. The Civil War was difficult for this area of Missouri. Residents were often caught in the middle no matter which side they supported. There is so much do to and see for everyone who lives in or visits Riverside including a dog park, 8 pickleball courts, a wide variety of trails, outdoor fitness court, city pool, shelters, amphitheater, baseball field, skate park and a local farmers market every Wednesday from June through October. Riverside is located about 15 minutes northwest of downtown Kansas City.
