Plaza
Photo Description
Development first began in the early 1900’s and by 1923 the Plaza became the first regional shopping center in the world to accommodate shoppers arriving by vehicle and the first suburban center with unified architecture. Its basic design reflects classic European influences, particularly those of Seville, Spain. The Plaza includes more than 30 statues, murals and tile mosaics on display. A half-sized, major architectural reproduction of the Giralda Tower of Seville is the tallest building in the Plaza. The Mill Creek Fountain, created by Henri-Le ́on Gre ́ber in 1910, was placed on the mansion of Clarence Mackay in Long Island, New York. It was brought to Kansas City in 1951, refurbished and dedicated in 1960. The fountain has four heroic horseman which are said to represent four of the world’s mightiest rivers: the Volga, the Seine, the Rhine and the Mississippi. In December 1925, the first display of holiday lights hung over the doorway of the Mill Creek Building. This was the beginning of a Kansas City tradition that spans over 90 years and is known nation-wide. Today the Plaza still thrives with much to offer area residents and regular visitors including shopping, restaurants, parks, historic architectural, sculptures and fountains. The Plaza is located about 10 minutes due south of downtown Kansas City.
