Early settlers came to town to western Missouri by riverboat from Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ohio, and by land from Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia. Peculiar got its name from the community’s first postmaster Edgar Thomson. After multiple name submissions were rejected by the Postmaster General, Mr. Thomson sent in one last name submission adding to the letter if the name he submitted wouldn’t do, to give the town some “peculiar” name. On June 22, 1868, the post office established the town as Peculiar and on July 29, 1868, Robert Cass, the county surveyor, plotted it and it was filed at the Town of Peculiar. Peculiar might be small, but it is mighty and has many great things to offer residents and visitors alike. These include a sports complex, nature trails, picnic areas/shelters, playgrounds and a city lake with lots of fishing to be done at. Peculiar also has a farmer and artist market from May through October each year. Locally crafted, raised and grown products readily available for consumers. This town thrives because of so many locals nurturing our neighborhoods with their shops. Peculiar is located about 35 minutes south of downtown Kansas City on I-49 highway
