Independence, Missouri was founded in 1827 and named after the Declaration of Independence. The city was a popular starting point for the Oregon, Santa Fe and California trails. Between 1821 to 1849, thousands of pioneers descended upon Independence to equip themselves for the long journey across the United States. Over time, Independence became known as the “Queen City of the Trails.” Throughout the city, there are several remaining historic sites that tell the story of Independence; they include Vaile Mansion, Bingham-Waggoner Estate, a 1859 Jail and the Marshal’s home. The log courthouse, built in 1827, was the only courthouse between St. Louis and the Pacific Ocean when trading began on the Santa Fe Trail. Make sure to visit the National Frontier Trails Museum as well. Born in Lamar, Missouri, then living in Belton, Harrisonville and even with his grandparents on their 600-acre farm in Grandview for a brief time, the Truman family moved Harry to Independence when he was six years old. Harry S. Truman, our 33rd President, spent most of his youth in Independence. After his presidency, Harry returned to Independence to live out the rest of his life. His home in Independence still stands and can be toured. The Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum is often cited as one of the best in the country. Among its extensive history, Independence has much to offer those living here and those who visit including; two golf courses, a community center, a sports arena, walking trails, museums, cinemas, art galleries, bowling, water park, fishing, parks that include butterfly area, picnic areas, gardens, nature programs, skate park, Japanese gardens and so much more. Independence is located about 25 minutes east of downtown Kansas City.
