In August 1869, George Scott and William Colburn purchased approximately 80 acres of land. When they filed the plat, they called the new town Belton. It was incorporated in 1871 and named after one of Scott’s close friends Captain Marcus Belt, who helped Scott survey the land. During the Civil War, General Order #11 had a devastating effect on many towns in Cass County including Belton. This order required all residents, regardless of their allegiance, to evacuate a four-county area in western Missouri. The order was intended to deprive pro-confederate freedom fighters of material support, however it backfired and let to greater support and access to supplies than before. Plundering and looting was rampant and torches were set to many fields and homes. This is how the area became known as the Burnt District. This area was largely uninhabited for over 15 months due to the destruction, but over time Belton was renewed, growth and progress flourished yet again. Today, Belton has much to offer everyone. From local parks, a wellness center, golf courses and a newly built Fairfield Inn. There is also a local railroad that has excursions of all sorts. Main Street in Belton has many historic buildings still standing and in use. Belton has many great Little Shops including printers, tea room, café, antiques, local theater, pet grooming/boarding/day care, boutiques and much more. Even on the outskirts of Belton there are many local farmers and great eateries. Belton is located about 30 minutes due south of downtown Kansas City.
