Liberty
Photo Description
Settlers came to the Liberty area in the early 1800’s and by 1822, the area had become the county seat (center for government activity for the county) of Clay County. Liberty was incorporated in 1829. It’s also the site of the first daylight bank robbery. The robbers were never caught, but the crime is contributed to the James Gang (consisting of brothers Jesse and Frank and other members). The bank still exists today and looks just as it did in 1866 on that fateful day and can be toured. The Odd Fellowes Home stands tall today after being built back in the early 1900’s. It was built to provide care and education to those who were unable to earn a livelihood by either age, affliction, being indigent, and for the wives and orphans of the members of the fraternal organization called the International Order of Odd Fellowes. Today it’s the home of a local winery that offers tours. Liberty is the county seat for Clay County. Liberty continues to flourish today offering everyone who lives and/or visits a wide variety of amenities including: public art murals and sculptures; a seasonal farmers market each Saturday between May and October; a community center that includes two outdoor and two indoor pools, weight room, gymnasium, performing arts center, conference rooms and a sprayground; parks with amenities that include pickleball, volleyball, basketball and tennis courts, dog park, skate park and a sports complex that has several baseball/softball and soccer fields, covered playgrounds and trails. Liberty is located about 25 miles northeast of downtown Kansas City.
